RACE 1: THE ACROPOLIS – 1200M

SMOKE BUSH was a late withdrawal at 8.45 a.m. when Trainer Mr D. Wilson reported that the filly was showing signs of being “tied up” over the hindquarters. Trainer Mr D. Wilson was advised that SMOKE BUSH would require a Veterinary Certificate of Soundness before racing or trialling again. Shortly after the start and near the 1100m OLEANDER (P. Farrell) and MAGIC PASS (J. Whiting) bumped. OLEANDER raced ungenerously in the early and middle stages. Passing the 1100m MR SANDGROPER (P. King) lay outwards and bumped EBONY’S MY DAD (P. Knuckey) heavily, which became unbalanced. Near the 1000m LONICERA (P. Harvey) shifted inwards tightening MR SANDGROPER, which was carried inwards onto MAGIC PASS which then blundered and dipped almost dislodging Jockey J. Whiting. EBONY’S MY DAD, which was following, was severely inconvenienced and veered inwards. On Inquiry Jockey P. Harvey was found guilty to a charge of careless riding under ARR.137(a) for causing this interference and was suspended from riding in races for a period of 18 days from midnight 3 September, 2003 until midnight 21 September, 2003. Passing the 975m MR SANDGROPER bumped with OLEANDER. Near the 950m MR SANDGROPER rolled outwards inconveniencing STAR TREK (Jason Brown), which raced keenly for a short distance. Near the 700m STAR TREK was held tight when racing to the inside of MR SANDGROPER and near the 450m was steadied from the heels of OLEANDER. EBONY’S MY DAD and STAR TREK lay inwards over the final 200m. MAGIC PASS returned with a laceration to the outside of the near hind cannon.

RACE 2: THE OLYMPIC – 1600M

GREY JOHNSON (P. King) dwelt at the start and shortly after was steadied getting its head in the air when DOCTOR WILLIAM (P. Harvey) shifted outwards slightly. SENECA (A. Sansom) threw its head on jumping. Passing the 1100m KUNDALINI (E. Dredge) raced keenly for a short distance. BUSINESS BROKER (Jason Brown), MOONBUGGY (C. Harvey) and DOCTOR WILLIAM raced wide throughout. SENECA raced wide on straightening and lay inwards over the final 225m with Jockey A. Sansom having to stop riding and straighten her mount on two occasions. Near the 200m EXTOLLING VIRTUE (T. Turner) rolled outwards brushing MOONBUGGY. DOCTOR WILLIAM had a tendency to lay inwards over the final 100m. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of BIG KEV Jockey J. Noske stated that the gelding had resented racing to the inside of other runners and for this reason he had taken BIG KEV wide approaching the 300m, however the gelding had failed to run on. Trainer Mr T. Martinovich expressed disappointment with the performance of BIG KEV and advised that it was now his intention to send the gelding for a spell. A post race Veterinary examination of BIG KEV revealed no abnormalities.

RACE 3: THE ST. ANDREWS – 1400M

TURN TO DREAM (Jason Miller) was slow into stride, losing ground. CLASSY CHARMER (A. Sansom) commenced awkwardly and shifted outwards bumping FREE AT LAST (T. Turner). BONNIE BRAE (P. Knuckey) commenced awkwardly and overraced in the early and middle stages. CLASSY CHARMER raced ungenerously in the early and middle stages. BRONZE CITY (Danny Miller) raced wide throughout.

RACE 4: FARNLEY STAKES – 1400M

SHIRAZAMATAZZ (D. Staeck) shifted outwards at the start carrying SWIFT SPICE (J. Noske) onto MODEM (P. Harvey). MODEM had a tendency to overrace in the early stages and near the 1000m shifted outwards slightly having to be steadied from the heels of MISS TORPAGO (P. Farrell) and as a result got its head in the air.

RACE 5: BELMONT PARK CUP – 2100M

COLLINS STREET (W. Hughes) was fractious in the barrier prior to the start. KONJO (S. O’Donnell) raced ungenerously in the early and middle stages and near the winning post the first time shifted inwards when steadied off the heels of WIN TO GRIN (Jason Brown) causing CZARIFFIC (G. Smith) to steady. SWISS ECHO (S. Parnham), which was following, was eased in consequence. PEKAN FLYER (N. Chapman) pulled hard when leading in the early stages. DEXIAN (D. Staeck) pulled hard in the early and middle stages. SUPER MOSS (Danny Miller) raced ungenerously near the 1500m and was then ridden forward. Passing the 800m KONJO and COLLINS STREET bumped. Approaching the 750m ADVENTURER (T. Turner) shifted outwards tightening DEXIAN, which was steadied. Passing the 500m KONJO, when taken outwards to avoid the heels of the tiring PEKAN FLYER, buffeted with CZARIFFIC. SHOELESS (J. Claite) raced wide from the 600m. A post race Veterinary examination of WIN TO GRIN revealed the gelding to have returned with a strain to the off fore tendon. Trainer Mr S. Plumb was advised that WIN TO GRIN would require a Veterinary Certificate of Soundness before trialling and would have to trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards before racing again.

RACE 6: THE O’GRADY LEFROY – 1000M

FAIR ALERT (W. Pike) was fractious in the barrier prior to the start and stumbled on jumping losing ground. In this incident Apprentice W. Pike was unbalanced. CANDY LAND (S. Parnham) reared throwing its head on jumping, losing ground. GRAND CAVALIER (P. King) shifted outwards at the start crowding PRINCE OF CHARM (K. Forrester) which bumped ZABASET (Danny Miller), which was then held tight by METALLURGY (Jason Brown). Shortly after the start GRAND CAVALIER commenced to race ungenerously with its mouth open and near the 700m was steadied from the heels of FAMILY DREAMS (P. Knuckey) and shifted outwards quickly carrying METALLURGY wide. CANDY LAND and ZABASET were inconvenienced in this incident. Shortly after this PRINCE OF CHARM, when taken outwards to improve its position, carried GRAND CAVALIER wide which bumped with METALLURGY. This caused METALLURGY to become unbalanced and shift inwards crowding GRAND CAVALIER. On Inquiry Stewards took into account the racing manner of GRAND CAVALIER, however Jockey K. Forrester (PRINCE OF CHARM) was told that in similar circumstances he should not permit his mount to shift outwards. Approaching the 500m PRINCE OF CHARM, when taken to the outside of FAMILY DREAMS, obliged GRAND CAVALIER and METALLURGY to race wide. FAIR ALERT was held up on straightening and passing the 250m, when attempting to obtain a clear run in marginal room between OUR BIG MARCUS (P. Harvey) on its outside and KENSINGTON PARK (J. Whiting) on its inside, bumped the hindquarters of OUR BIG MARCUS. FAIR ALERT then shifted inwards causing KENSINGTON PARK to check severely. On Inquiry Apprentice W. Pike was found guilty to a charge of careless riding under ARR.137(a) for attempting a run where there was insufficient room to do so and had his permit to ride in races suspended for a period of 21 days from midnight 30 August, 2003 until midnight 20 September, 2003. PRINCE OF CHARM had a tendency to lay inwards over the final 250m. GRAND CAVALIER was impeded for a clear run behind PRINCE OF CHARM from the 225m until the 125m. Passing the 100m FAMILY DREAMS shifted inwards tightening OUR BIG MARCUS which restrained. On Inquiry Jockey P. Knuckey pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under ARR.137(a) for causing this interference and was suspended from riding in races for a period of 14 days from midnight 4 September, 2003 until midnight 18 September, 2003. METALLURGY returned with a laceration to the near hind coronet. KENSINGTON PARK returned with abrasions to both hinds.

RACE 7: THE HELLENIC TROPHY – 1600M

KELDAAN (P. Farrell) and FRIGHTFUL MANNER (N. Chapman) were slow to begin. Near the 1400m WAIKOPOU BAY (P. Harvey) was steadied when BANDOLERO (J. Claite) crossed. Jockey J. Claite (BANDOLERO) was told to exercise more care when shifting ground. FRIGHTFUL MANNER pulled hard in the early stages with the saddle slipping forward. Due to this Jockey N. Chapman elected to ride the mare forward with the saddle then returning to its correct position at the turn into the straight. OUR SELECTION (A. Sansom) pulled hard in the middle stages and near the 1200m bumped STAR OF VAIN (K. Forrester) on several occasions. LADOS (D. Staeck) raced ungenerously in the middle stages. Near the 700m LADOS shifted outwards obliging ICE MAGIC (W. Pike) and FRIGHTFUL MANNER to race wider. BANDOLERO returned with its tongue over the bit. Trainer Mr S. Wolfe advised that he would make a gear change to rectify this problem.

RACE 8: THE BELMONT PARK GREEK DAY – 1200M

RAISE THE ROOF (N. Chapman) threw its head on jumping and lost ground. MANJAR MAGIC (P. Hall) was slow into stride. THOMSON’S BAY (J. Claite) commenced awkwardly. LUXURY LINER (P. King) raced fiercely in the early and middle stages. Near the 1100m TRUE AND CORRECT (D. Staeck) rolled inwards away from TIP THE TILL (P. Harvey) which lay inwards, crowding THOMSON’S BAY onto LUXURY LINER, which was steadied. RAISE THE ROOF threw its head in the air on several occasions between the 1100m and the 950m. Near the 950m TIP THE TILL, when continuing to lay inwards, crowded TRUE AND CORRECT onto UNCLE ROBERT (K. Forrester). DECISION TO GO (T. Turner) raced wide in the early and middle stages. Passing the 900m LUXURY LINER, when continuing to race fiercely, had to be steadied from the heels of POLITONIC (C. Harvey), getting its head in the air. Near the 250m BEYOND DISPUTE (S. Parnham) was tightened and restrained when racing between TRUE AND CORRECT on its outside and DECISION TO GO on its inside. An Inquiry was opened into this incident and adjourned until 1.30 p.m. on Monday, 1 September, 2003 at the offices of The Western Australian Turf Club. POLITONIC lay inwards near the 200m. Near the 150m BEYOND DISPUTE was taken outwards across the heels of POLITONIC to obtain a clear run. RAISE THE ROOF lay inwards over the final 100m.
