Don Eduardo's Sister Withdrawn from Karaka Sale

Cambridge Stud has announced the withdrawal of what promised to be one of the star lots at the upcoming National Yearling Sales, the Zabeel-Diamond Lover filly.

She is a sister to Don Eduardo, the AJC Derby winner who fetched an Australasian record price of $3.6 million when he was put through the Karaka ring by Cambridge Stud five years ago.

“There’s no doubt that she’s a lovely filly,” said Cambridge Stud principal Sir Patrick Hogan in announcing the decision to withdraw her from his draft, “but she is not without conformational faults in her forelegs.

“Justine and I originally decided to enter her for the sale in July. If she had shown enough improvement with constant attention from the stud’s blacksmith Laurie Lynch we would have been happy for her to go forward to the sales.

“Although she has improved to the point that her off foreleg is now fully correct and her near fore by some 50%, she will still need ongoing attention to give her the best opportunity of becoming a racehorse before embarking on her stud career.

“It is my opinion that she is a filly who will need to be given time to mature,” Sir Patrick added. “As one veterinarian who has inspected her said to me, it would be difficult not to comment on her near fore conformational fault, but that given time it will continue to improve.

'Obviously there has been intense interest in this filly and we felt that we owed it to potential buyers and the sales company to make a decision,' said Sir Patrick.

The filly’s inclusion in the National Sale catalogue was a golden opportunity to buy directly into a family recognised as the best in this part of the world. Besides Don Eduardo, she is a sibling to another group one winner in Tristalove, as well as to major winners Peruzzi and Antwerp.

Their group one-winning dam Diamond Lover is a daughter of legendary broodmare Eight Carat. Cambridge Stud is in the fortunate position of owning nine young female members of this great family.
