Guy Walter is not getting carried away with Dream Ballad's brilliant win at Goulburn on Friday although the Group One Spring Champion Stakes is on the agenda for the half-brother to Tie The Knot.

But first the colt must prove himself and the trainer will run him in a class one over 1600m at Newcastle next week before setting the bar higher.

Walter said the Group Three Spring Stakes over the same trip at the two-day Newcastle meeting was out of the question.

"He won a weak maiden at Goulburn in impressive fashion so he'll run in the class one race," Walter said.

"We'll look at things after that. If he does measure up then the Spring Champion Stakes and the other staying races over the spring could be where he heads."

By Singspiel out of Whisked, Dream Ballad carried the Tait family's famous red and white colours to a 5-3/4 length victory over 1400m at what was his third start.

The Walter-trained Tie The Knot won the first of 13 Group One races when he took out the 1997 Spring Champion Stakes.

Sandy Tait and his sister Jill Nivison also race Wild Iris who was beaten just over a length when sixth to Nevis in Saturday's Chelmsford Stakes (1600m).

It was an encouraging effort from the 2004 AJC Australian Oaks winner who was the early favourite for last year's Caulfield Cup before her spring campaign was aborted after four starts when she succumbed to ongoing feet problems.

Those are now behind her and the mare has pleased Walter with her progress.

"I thought she ran a good race in the Chelmsford and she is coming along well," he said.

"She'll run in the Hill Stakes and then maybe the Craven Plate before the Caulfield Cup.

The Hill Stakes (1900m) is at Rosehill on September 17 with the Craven Plate (2000m) at Randwick a fortnight later.

Zingam, who ran 1-1/2 lengths eighth in the tightly-packed finish to the Chelmsford is likely to follow a similar path but with just 50.5kg in the Cups that program could be changed.

"He would be doubtful to get in the Melbourne Cup with that weight so he may have to go to Melbourne to run in races like the Coongy Handicap or Geelong Cup to get into the race," Walter said.
