Premier jockey Nick Ryan is in doubt to fulfil his five riding engagements at Flemington on Friday after injuring his right hip in a race fall at Ballarat.

Ryan was riding the Mathew Ellerton-trained debutante Astrologer in the Ballarat Holden Plate (1100m) when the two-year-old stumbled just after the winning post dislodging him.

Medical staff treated Ryan on course, applying ice packs to his hip.

Ryan said Astrologer, who was a tiring fourth nearly 12 lengths behind the winner Due Sasso in the six-horse field, seemed to cross his legs and stumbled.

"I was very lucky it was a small field and it happened where it did," Ryan said.

Ryan's manager Glenn Darcy said a decision would be made overnight whether Ryan would ride at Flemington.

His rides are Lee Freedman-trained stablemates Swinging Bachelor and Tara Na, as well as Dante's Best, Smash `N' Grab and Off White for Mathew Ellerton.

Ryan also has five rides at Sandown on Saturday.

The winner of last year's Melbourne jockeys' premiership, Ryan is currently fourth on the table with 27 wins, 10 behind joint leaders Dan Nikolic and Craig Williams.
