The much-hyped return of Silent Witness ended in disappointment for his legions of fans when he was soundly beaten in the Centenary Sprint Cup at Sha Tin.
The world's highest rated sprinter for the past two years, Silent Witness had not raced in Hong Kong since May last year when he was beaten in the Champions Mile.
He recaptured his form in Japan in October but shortly afterwards came down with the symptoms of a virus.
His trackwork in the past couple of weeks suggested he was back to his best but he laboured to finish seventh in the 1000m race won by Scintillation.
The Australian bred Silent Witness gained a cult following with 17 wins from 17 starts before his first defeat.
His record now stands at 18 wins from 21 starts and almost $A10 million prizemoney.
By El Moxie from Jade Tiara, Silent Witness was bought for $55,000 at the 2001 William Inglis Classic sale in Sydney.
