Trainer Guy Walter made his first visit to Scone on Friday and walked away with the Listed $110,000 Scone Cup (1600m) courtesy of Fighting Fund.

Walter will now spell the four-year-old and prepare him for the Villiers Stakes at Randwick in December.

"I have always had a big opinion of this horse but he has been a slow maturer," Walter said.

"I thought he was a lightweight chance in the Doncaster Handicap and I paid up for him but he went amiss.

"This is only his second preparation and to win six races from 12 starts is a great effort.

"He can go for a spell now and come back with the Villiers as his mission."

Apprentice Kathy O'Hara had Fighting Fund ($8) settled in sixth and seventh place to the turn and bided her time before issuing a challenge well down the straight to win by three-quarters of a length.

Diamond Sun ($31) was a luckless second with But I'm Serious ($31) a further half-head away.

Favourite Tall Timbers tired to finish ninth after a wide run.

O'Hara said Fighting Fund felt stronger than at his previous start when he won the Rowley Mile at Hawkesbury.

"He settled beautifully and even at the 600 metres I knew he had too much on them," O'Hara said.

"I have only had a few rides at Scone and this is my second winner here."

Walter said the only reason he had never been to Scone before was that he had not had suitable horses for the carnival.

"This is an absolutely amazing track and a wonderful carnival," Walter said.

"With this huge crowd the atmosphere is outstanding.
