Zac Purton has accused trainer Matthew Smith of lying to a stewards' inquiry over pre-race instructions he gave the jockey whose ride on the unplaced Clang Fashion at Canterbury on June 14 caused concern to officials. The inquiry was one of two held involving big punter Eddie Hayson and trainer Tim Martin. The Martin-trained Typhoon Zed won the race after being backed from $17 to $8.50. Earlier Purton was one of four jockeys quizzed over their rides in the ongoing Interfere inquiry and was again under scrutiny into the run of Clang Fashion who finished fourth in the Young Members Day Hcp (1100m). Stewards were concerned that Purton elected to go back to the inside near the 600m and was held up for a run in the straight before eventually getting clear when it was too late to finish fourth, just over two lengths from the winner. Purton said his instructions were to get back and get cover and stay away from the fence in the straight. Smith told the raceday inquiry he had told Purton to stay away from the inside and reiterated that on Monday, but the jockey said that was untrue. "He is lying about that part of the race," Purton said. "The only time he warned me about the fence was in the straight." Asked by senior steward Steve Railton if that contradicted his evidence at the original hearing that he (Purton) may have misinterpreted, Purton said: "I was giving him the chance to come clean. "I am saying he is lying. "He's trying to save his arse. He's scared, the media have been banging drums. "Mr Smith was shaking, he's worried, I'm not worried. "If I had it to do over again, I would do the same thing." Hayson submitted his mobile telephone records to both inquiries. The records showed he spoke to Typhoon Zed's jockey Allan Robinson prior to the race but Hayson said it was not about the race. PICS - Sportpix.
