The Peter and Paula Krekelberg race day to be conducted at Murwillumbah racecourse on Monday is sure to have the local racing fraternity abuzz with excitement. The declaration of acceptances yesterday revealed a huge list of 102 thoroughbreds set to vie for the prizemoney in the eight race TAB card. The feature is a class five event, the Nellie Memorial Handicap over 1510 metres.

Though weather predictions leading to Monday's meeting are for some cloud and the occasional spot of rain, the track has been dry for over a fortnight. As the sometimes mischievous gods of the turf would have it, the sub-tropical sun has been shining almost continuously since the abandonment of the June 25, Murwillumbah Cup meeting, caused by three days of deluge.

Jockey club secretary Steve Huggins says that things are on the up and up for racing on the Tweed, as he announced some early details about the inaugural Murwillumbah Spring Cup due to be run at the club's October meeting.

"The Spring Cup will be a Sky Channel Gold Race, and worth $20,000 in prizemoney."

"Total prizemoney on the day will be in the order of $57,000."

"The event will be a special family day with all manner of attractions, competitions and prizes, for adults and kids alike."

"In coming weeks we hope to be announcing details of a local charity we will be promoting on Spring Cup day," Mr Huggins said.
