All Black Gold is on track for the Group One Spring Champion Stakes after providing trainer Chris Waller with his greatest racing achievement in the Gloaming Stakes at Rosehill on Saturday.

Jay Ford rode the three-year-old to victory in the Group Three 1800m event holding off Tuesday Joy by 1-1/4 lengths.

Waller has enjoyed stakes success in the past with the likes of Party Belle and Go Ziggy but was thrilled with Saturday's result.

"That's my biggest win ever," Waller said.

After winning a class three at Rosehill last week Waller was pleased he made the decision to enter All Black Gold in the Gloaming.

"He's been racing well and I thought he'd be right to back up and he was," Waller said.

"Hopefully we can find a few more wins like that along the way."

Waller says he is confident the colt is capable of another step up in class when he takes on the Group One Spring Champion Stakes at Randwick on October 7.

"He showed a bit of class today and I think he'll handle the 2000 metre trip," he said.

Waller said he would wait and see how All Black Gold handled the trip in the Group One event before he makes a decision on just how far he goes.

All Black Gold is a half-brother to 2002 Doomben Cup winner Mr. Bureaucrat and is owned by two doctors, one a New Zealander and the other an Australian.

Ford was impressed with the extra gear the colt found halfway down the straight.

"We sat in behind the leader and when I asked him for something he let down tremendously, he's got a brilliant turn of foot," Ford said.

Meanwhile the Bart Cummings-trained Empires Choice finished a disappointing 12th as the $3.60 favourite.

Questions remain over the spring campaign of the colt after Saturday's run left the champion trainer perplexed.
