Cubozoa Earns Shot At Sydney Autumn

Promising three-year-old Cubozoa may have earned a shot at next year's Sydney autumn carnival following his narrow victory on debut in the Chime Zam Maiden at Eagle Farm.

Cubozoa ($3.60) finished powerfully to edge out topweight Pommard ($2.30 fav) by a neck in the 1000m race with Bythemountain ($4.80) a further 1-3/4 lengths away third.

Cubozoa was bred by Prime Thoroughbreds syndicator Joe O'Neill who raced the gelding's mother Transparent Lass, also a winner on her debut when trained by Bill Mitchell in Brisbane six years ago.

O'Neill has numerous horses in training around the country including with champion trainer David Hayes.

"I think he might be a good horse and we'll probably give him one more run before putting him out for a break," O'Neill said.

"His mother was a super filly but had knee problems before she was retired.

"When he comes back from a spell we might send him to Sydney for the autumn."

Cubozoa also earned rave reviews from his Gold Coast trainer Mel Eggleston.

"David Hayes and I both looked at him in the paddock and David wanted him straight away but Joe said he was going to me," Eggleston said.

"I think once he gets up to 1600 metres he'll be very good and if he doesn't go to Sydney for the autumn then there's always the Brisbane winter carnival next year."

Cubozoa is raced by a syndicate of eight which also includes Andrew Fisher who grew up with winning jockey Michael Cahill at Cowra before going on to become editor of the Cowra Guardian newspaper.

Meanwhile, old warrior Omnitrader booked a start in the Listed Brisbane Hcp (1600m) at Eagle Farm in November following his all-the-way win in the Charlton Boy Welter (1500m).

Omnitrader ($2.60 fav) notched up his 21st career win in 97 starts when he strolled home by 2-1/4 lengths from Mythological ($5.50).

Trainer Maryann Thexton heaped praised on apprentice Mandy Radecker who followed instructions to the letter on the eight-year-old.

"I told Mandy not to touch his mouth from the 1300 metres and just let him run," Thexton said.
