Thousand Guineas Made For Diamonds Upset

Talented Adelaide filly Made Of Diamonds has won four races but it was a placing at weight-for-age last month that triggered plans to run her in Wednesday's Group One Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield.

Trainer Phillip Stokes was happy poking around with her in Adelaide races but the alarm bells went off when she was beaten less than a length by Temple Hills and Royal Ida in the Penny Edition Stakes (1450m) at Cheltenham.

"When she finished third against older horses at weight-for-age we thought it was a good enough form line to have a crack at this," Stokes said.

After a close second to Stormhill in the Group Two Shannon Stakes in Sydney, Temple Hills last Saturday was beaten just over two lengths when seventh to Red Dazzler in the Group One Toorak Hcp (1600m).

Royal Ida, the winner of 11 races including two stakes races leading up to the Penny Edition, has since won at Flemington .

"Really she has done everything we have asked of her," Stokes said.

While most runners have taken a traditional path through either the Group One Flight Stakes in Sydney or the Group Two Edward Manifold Stakes at Flemington, Made Of Diamonds stands out as an exception with a win in the Listed Morphettville Guineas (1600m) at her last start.

Stokes said the Thousand Guineas was a big step up in class for the filly but she is yet to miss place in eight starts and he has nothing but praise for her.

"We thought she deserved her chance and we hope she can run in the first three again," Stokes said.

"It is very hard to be too confident but she tries very hard and I think she will get around Caulfield without any problems."

Nash Rawiller will be hoping for his second big race upset in five days on Made Of Diamonds after scoring a shock victory on Casual Pass in last Saturday's Group One Yalumba Stakes at Caulfield.

Stokes said he would leave race tactics up to Rawiller.

"She is very versatile and she can go forward or go back," Stokes said.

Miss Finland was the victim of an upset last start when, after using tearaway tactics, she was mowed down near the line and finished second to She Will Be Loved in the Edward Manifold Stakes.

Trainer David Hayes has never won the Thousand Guineas but his late brother Peter was successful with Lady Of the Pines (1997) and his father Colin before that with Bianco Flyer (1987).
