Nine Meeting Ban for Hughes Over 'Incompetent' Ride

ALLAN SCOTT PARK MORPHETTVILLE WEDNESDAY, 11 APRIL 2007
Allan Scott Park Morphettville - Saturday, 10 March 2007

Race 3  :  The Direct Mix Sprint  -  1050 Metres

Stewards have concluded their inquiries into jockey Warren Hughes' riding of CATSKIN in this event.  Further evidence was taken from the Trainer of CATSKIN, Mr. D. Jolly, and W. Hughes and the official vision of CATSKIN's three previous starts at Cheltenham Park on 24 February 2007, at Victoria Park on 13 December 2006 and at Balaklava on 15 November 2006 was viewed.

Although not entirely satisfied with W. Hughes' riding of CATSKIN in the early stages of the event when he did not attempt to hold his position, Stewards accepted his riding in this instance had sufficient consistency and similarity to his riding in its previous starts to not proceed.  W. Hughes was cautioned to demonstrate greater initiative in future.

After considering the evidence relative to his riding of CATSKIN from the 800 metres to the 700 metres, W. Hughes was charged with incompetent riding under ARR.137(a) n that inside the 800 metres, when racing inside IMPERIUM, he failed to make any reasonable attempt to maintain his position on the back of NEW TRADITION as that gelding improved when, in the opinion of Stewards, there was sufficient room.  W. Hughes pleaded guilty and was suspended from riding in races for a period commencing at midnight tonight, 11 April and expiring at midnight on Wednesday, 2 May 2007;  a period of nine (9) race meetings.  In determining this penalty Stewards acknowledged W. Hughes' riding record in that he had not previously been charged with a similar riding offence and his forthrightness before the Panel.
