Through the long head win of two-year-old colt Bolton Abbey the Hobartville Stud Pty Ltd Syndicate, managed by G E Mapp, was victorious in the opening event at Cheltenham on Saturday.

Sired by the United States bred stallion Fasliyev from the Centaine mare Slight Chance, Bolton Abbey $6, who is under the care of David Hayes and had Chad Lever in the saddle, was not very far off the lead for the entire 1410 metre race. Facing the starter for the sixth time and recording his third win, the second at Cheltenham, Bolton Abbey beat the Richard Jolly trained David Carney mount Soowee, the $2.80 favourite. Leon Macdonald and Clare Lindop were associated with Urbanvue $4.40, who was a length away third.

Punters could not separate the $3.50 equal favourite, the winner Musidora and the unplaced Shasmecka in the 1000 metre second race. A two-year- old of Rock Of Gibraltar filly from the Bering mare Nice Dancing, the David Hayes trained Paul Gatt ridden Musidora was near the rear of the field in the early and middle stages then, getting a rails run, she went on record a one and quarter length win.

The Chad Lever ridden Fontaine's Fantasy $15 completed the quinella for the Hayes stable. A farther two lengths away was Spanish Diva $7.50 for Gary Searle and Jason Lyon.

Riding his first City winner apprentice Tim Axon was the most excited person at Cheltenham on Saturday when the David Jolly prepared Indira Morning $7.50 was the nose winner of the 1000 metre third race. Settling down near the back of the field the three-year-old filly, by Indian Danehill out of a Brondesbury mare Stella Matutina, got a rails run.

David Balfour and apprentice Amy Herrmann were associated with the second placegetter Fasadina $8, while Our Dior $6 was a farther one and three quarter lengths away third for Jason Lyon and Karen Byrnes.

A lucky pick up ride at the expense of the injured Simon Price saw Wayne Kerford salute the judge on the John Macmillan prepared Londo in the 2420 metre fourth race. A length winner and starting at $6 the Octagonal mare is from Londolozi, an El Qahira mare. Settling in the middle of the field and then being one off the rails, Londo went on to defeat the Joe Lockyer trained Dominic Tourneur mount Sparking Top $21.

A farther one and three quarter lengths away third was the Darryl Dodson trained Kane Post ridden Semper Paratus $11.

Clare Lindop brought up the first leg of a double when she guided the Andrew Gluyas mentored Ready Made to a nose victory in the fifth race which run over 1460 metres. A three-year-old gelding from the Barathea mare Sanctus, Ready Made is by the United States stallion More Than Ready. Starting at $6 Ready Made, who was well served by the start, won in an exciting photo finish from the David Hayes mentored Paul Gatt ridden Reef $7.50. The David Carney ridden Gary Searle trained So Ready $7 was another long neck away third.

Trainer Phillip Stokes and Shane Cahill were very happy with the win of $2-50 public elect Altivo in the 1310 metre sixth race. A Zeditive gelding from the Danehill mare Tennesee Midnight, Altivo was well positioned throughout the event and had a two and a quarter length margin over his rivals.

Lesvos Lady $17 filled second placing for Norm Darragh and Michael Hoppo with the Mick Price trained apprentice Damien Robinson ridden Our Bella Rossa $8 being a farther length away third.

Clare Lindop brought up the second leg of her double when the Sue Murphy mentored Gunner Tom $6 was the one length winner of the 1260 metre seventh race. A Military Plume gelding out of Golden Cafe, an Estaminet mare, Gunner Tom was always in the leading half of the field.

The $2.80 favourite Jest For Fun finished second for Jon O'Connor and apprentice Ben Hoppo while Chatz $26 was another half length away for Mark Lewis and Troy Baker.

The combination of Gary Kennewell and Matthew Neilson were all smiles when Xaarhea won the final event which was run over 1460 metres. Starting at $3-20 the Xaar four-year-old mare Xaarhea, from Rockin' Rhea, a Francis Bacon mare, began well then drifted back before getting to the lead and recording a three quarters of a length win.

The Karen Byrnes trained apprentice Amy Herrmann ridden Bergstrom $14 was placed second while Flouze $7-50 was a farther neck away third for David Hayes and Paul Gatt.
