Former Far North Queensland mare Mata Mia further enhanced a brilliant first up record when she won the Waterford Road Handicap (1115m) at Werribee today.

Now in the stables of Danny O'Brien, Mata Mia's fresh record reads out at three wins and a second placing from four starts.

A daughter of the record breaking sire Lion Hunter, Mata Mia kicked away her career in Townsville and after missing a place when fourth on debut, she has not missed a place since.

And since coming south and joining the Flemington stables of Danny O'Brien, Mata Mia has the imposing record of three wins, two seconds and two third placings from seven runs.

In winning Mata Mia denied trainer John Moloney a running double following the previous race win of the promising filly Bonded.

Moloney's representative Heresay, with Blake Shinn up, was second, a length from the winner and a nose ahead of third placegetter Fidemus.

While Heresay and Fidemus both ran well, today was Mata Mia's day.

"She's got a great record since she's come to Danny," winning rider James Winks commented. "She settled well and in the end it was a good, tough win."

"Normally she's up there wanting to do her bit."

"Today it was good, I gave her plenty of room and she knuckled down to the task and won well," Winks added.

Mata Mia is one of two winners, from two runners, for the four time winning Celestial Dancer mare Matiya.

Matiya in turn is a daughter of the city winning and stakes placed Uncle Remus mare No Conscience.

Her sire Lion Hunter, also represented by three winners at Toowoomba this afternoon, is sadly no longer with us, but made his presence felt last season when he captured a world record for the most progeny wins in a racing season in one country.

Ironically Mata Mia's dam is by the previous world record holder, Celestial Dancer.
