Rain May Hurt Weekend Hussler's Chances

The biggest threat to odds-on favourite Weekend Hussler claiming Saturday's Group One Caulfield Guineas could come from mother nature, rather than a rival runner.

While most betting firms around Australia have the Ross McDonald-trained gelding the dominant $1.75 favourite, Colin Tidy's betchoice.com is happy to let punters on at $1.80 - for the time being.

Showers are forecast in Melbourne for the next three days and Weekend Hussler's only defeat came on a slow track at Sale on his debut in August.

"We'll sit out at $1.80 by ourselves with Weekend Hussler in case the rain does come," said betchoice.com spokesman Mark Morrissey.

"They're tipping showers and while he's probably unbeatable on a dry track he might be a risk if it gets to slow."

Weekend Hussler has won his only other three starts by an aggregate of 15-1/2 lengths, all on tracks dead or better.

Trainer Rick Hore-Lacy said a wet track may offer the only hope for an upset in the $1 million Guineas.

Hore-Lacy will saddle up Dandy Dollar who was a shock last-start winner of the Listed Concept Sports Stakes (1410m) at Flemington after being unable to go with Weekend Hussler when fifth to him in the Lord Dudley Hcp (1400m) at Sandown on September 30.

"They can all get beaten but if he (Weekend Hussler) is as good as Ross says he is, and he certainly looks the goods, then he should win easily," Hore-Lacy said.

"I think in the present situation all the others would be hoping for a wet track and that their horse handles it and he doesn't."

Hore-Lacy said he didn't back Dandy Dollar last start, such were his doubts that he could measure up to the class, but the Dash For Cash gelding continued to surprise him.

"He is still learning and is an improving young horse," Hore-Lacy said.

"He's improved a bit since last Saturday."

Meanwhile, Sale trainer Ian Hutchins said he was influenced to start Emjay Hussey in the Guineas after Dandy Dollar won the Concept Sports Stakes.

Emjay Hussey finished in front of Dandy Dollar when fourth to Weekend Hussler at Sandown.

"I thought at Sandown the last 150 metres of the race was his best and I did say if he did go on to the Guineas I wanted to ride him a little bit different," Hutchins said.

"We're going to ride him quiet and see if he hits the line.

"The Guineas is an extra 200 metres and he worked terrifically here on Wednesday morning. I was very pleased with him.

"The horse is fit and well and the owners were happy to pay the $5,500 (final declaration fee) to run him."

A $50,000 purchase at the Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale, Emjay Hussey is by Hussonet who is also the sire of Weekend Hussler and another Guineas contender Husson Lightning who was runner-up in the Concept Sports Stakes.

Emjay Hussey made his debut at Caulfield with an impressive win in the Blue Sapphire Classic (1200m) on May 12, beating subsequent QTC Sires' Produce Stakes winner Masked Assassin who resumes in Saturday's Schillaci Stakes (1000m).

Emjay Hussey has since had three unplaced starts and will again be ridden by Vlad Duric who has been on him throughout his career.
