Trainer Danny O'Brien and jockey Damien Oliver notched up Classic Day doubles when Escadaire got home in a busy finish to win the $56,000 Kids Clothing Co. Handicap (1300m) at Sandown today.

The win was a lucky pick up ride for Damien Oliver, with regular rider James Winks tied to the ride of Anna's Choice after a mix up.

"Originally he (O'Brien) said Escadaire wouldn't run - so I got on Anna's Choice," Winks said. "And then he changed his mind and I had to stick to the other horse."

That left the door open to Oliver, sporting his Mo-vember moustache, to strike. The win was his second after earlier in the afternoon partnering Star Rose to win the first race.

O'Brien, best known this spring for providing the quinellagetters in the Caulfield Cup, Master O'Reilly and Douro Valley, had won the previous race with promising filly Pleasantsundaygirl.

At the post Escadaire ($4.80-$5-$4.60 fav) held a neck margin over Adelaide visitor Sebrle ($7-$9) in a driving finish.

The judge couldn't split Larson ($15-$21) and Dismissal ($7-$7.50-$6.50) for third, another head back behind the runner-up.

Winks' mount Anna's Choice was fifth over the line.

"He's reached his grade," O'Brien said of Escadaire.

"But he's won a Saturday race now, it's good for the owners. Hopefully he can win a few more for them."

"I said to the owners before the race, that if he wins he will win by a neck."

"He doesn't really have a turn of foot, but he just keeps on humming along."

"We picked this race out after Cup week - it looked a lovely race for him," O'Brien added.

"He's a horse who always keeps on trying. He looked beaten a couple of times, but he hits the one speed and then holds it."

"He can't find a length, but he just keeps going and usually shows a lot of courage."

Connections were glad to see the four-year-old gelded son of O'Reilly get back in the winner's stall after his disappointing last start seventh behind El Pauji at Flemington.

"He was found wanting that day," O'Brien said.

"They out sprinted him over the last 200 (metres)."

Escadaire's overall race record now reads out at four wins and two minor placings from 15 starts. His earnings rose from $83,065 to $119,465 courtesy of today's cheque for first.

The win was also the second on the day for Waikato Stud stallion O'Reilly following the victory of the Lee Freedman trained Just Curious in the second race of the day.
