The powerful Danny O'Brien stable unearthed a likely black type performer at Moonee Valley tonight in the form of the Macquarie Underwriting Plate (1200m) winner Code Black.

A beautifully bred daughter of gun kiwi sire O'Reilly, Code Black made the best possible start to her racing career by scoring a commanding win on debut.

When the finish was reached Code Black ($4.60) held a length margin over runner-up Borscht ($7.50).

The winner's stablemate Dr Schimmell ($7) was another three parts of a length back in third place.

O'Brien's stable foreman Gino Mata said Code Black had shown ability for some time and he was glad she was able to come and make a bright start to her racing career.

"She's shown us good ability for a while and we thought this being a maiden in town was a nice spot to kick her off," Mata said.

"It was a good spot to kick her off. These maidens at Moonee Valley are about the toughest going around."

"For her to do that on this course, at night, augurs well hopefully as she follows the family tradition."

"She's very well bred. She enjoyed herself tonight, she pricked her ears on the line."

"Naturally with these well bred fillies, you will look to the stakes races for some black type later on. They (black type races) are a bit thin now through to the new year though."

The win was another for the red hot partnership of O'Brien and jockey James Winks.

A frequent visitor to the winner's stall aboard an O'Brien trained runner, Winks was suitably impressed by the performance from Code Black.

"Danny (O'Brien) said he had quite a good opinion of her," Winks noted. "It was a really good win and I think she will only improve into the future."

"At the finish she star gazed a bit, so she's still got more to learn."

"She will definitely get further," Winks summed up.

Raced by Danny O'Brien and Nelson Schick's Windsor Park Stud Syndicate, Code Black was a $230,000 purchase from the Easter Yearling Sale in 2006.

She is a half or full sister to three stakes performers including the Group Three winner Crepe De Chine and Singapore star Arenti.

Dam Gio, a sprinting winner by Centaine, is a sister to Escada - the stakes performed dam of O'Brien's former multiple Group One winning sprinter Glamour Puss.

Code Black's sire O'Reilly is best known as the sire of Group One winners Alamosa, Guyno, The Jewel and Final Destination as well as star stablemate, 2007 Caulfield Cup winner Master O'Reilly.
