Global Warming was the winner of the $80,000, listed, Canterbury Classic (1100m) at the Sydney Turf Club's meeting at Canterbury on Thursday, out-sprinting the well credentialed Paratroopers and Spark Of Life, both of who were resuming racing after spells.

Spark Of Life, back after racing in Queensland back in May, commenced well under Hugh Bowman from barrier one and opened a lead as the field went down the back straight.

Global Warming and Larry Cassidy settled behind the leaders while Paratroopers and Danny Nikolic were in sixth place while the leaders sped ahead.

Turning into the main straight Spark Of Life had a 3/4L lead and seemed to be working well with his 61kg, but at the 150m he faded quickly. Cassidy had improved on Global Warming and they went to the lead opening a good break, while further back Nikolic was having trouble extracting Paratroopers from behind fading runners.

Once Paratroopers (Commands) had clear running room in the middle of the track he made up ground on the leader, but it was too late, and Global Warming had the win by a long neck.

Biscayne Bay (Stravinsky) came home for third, the margin 1 1/4L. The time was 1.03.66 and the final 600m in 35.04. Global Warming paid $8.70 on NSW TAB.

"That suited him and barrier two suited him as well," said trainer Kevin Moses.

"I said to Larry ‘don't panic and just wait.

"He (Global Warming) is just learning and relaxing, and saving his energy for raceday. It is very, very good," he said.

"He went beautifully," said Cassidy.

"I got to the 500m and he just trucked up on the bit and it was just a matter of when to let him go," he added.

Global Warming carried 53kg, against Paratroopers 61kg, and the weight advantage helped, but it was the most significant win by the four-year-old gelding by Agnes World, out of the Flying Spur mare She's Purring.

Owned by Sydney Turf Club director Nick Moraitis, it was Global Warming's fifth win from 14 starts after two good earlier runs since resuming in December. The first at Randwick over 1100m resulted in a win, which was followed by a second over 1000m on the Kensington track at Randwick on January 9th.

The weight, barrier draw and race fitness all came together for the win.
