James Winks got the winning ride as an afterthought on in form mare Origami Miss, which produced a solid finishing run to win the Ritzenhoff Handicap at Flemington on Cup Day.
Originally Craig Newitt was booked for the ride, but when Origami Miss was first emergency he accepted the ride on the Barbara Marshman trained Come Fly With Me, meaning that Winks was booked as the replacement. Come Fly With Me finished twelfth, while Winks rode a perfectly judged race to bring Origami Miss ($15-$17) home the winner by a long neck over Hidden Wonder ($8-$11) with another long neck to third placed Rendzina ($9-$12). Well backed favourite Tijuana ($4.40-$5.00-$4.60F) was fifth, right on the heels of the placegetters. "She was never going to get beaten during the race", Winks observed.
Despite the ease of her win, Winks felt that Origami Miss still has scope for improvement. "She's just had a handful of starts and she's still learning what its all about", he said. "She wanted to lay in and later when she got to the front she wanted to lay out so she's not galloping to her full potential." Troy Corstens, filling in for his father, Leon, paid tribute to syndicator Brad Cooper who put together the throng of excited owners crowding around the winner's stall.
"It is lovely for these owners to have a winner on Melbourne Cup day", he said. "Brad does a real good job syndicating his horses and its its great to see the guys win." While there were only nine named owners in the racebook, there were plenty more than that in the mounting yard.
"Officially there's ten but there would be a hell of a lot more than that", Corstens said.
Origami Miss has now won her last three races in a row, a performance which Corstens believes is due to a change in riding tactics. "We were riding her on the pace and the second we started going back on her she really finished it off hard", he said. Corstens was full of praise for Winks ride on Origami Miss. "It was a super ride", he said.
"She was stuck back on the fence and I wondered if she would get out." "He peeled out the outside and she finished it off nicely." Corstens is not sure whether the stable will press on with Origami Miss while she is in such good winning form. "She's never put in a bad run", he said. "We won't get too carried away.""We were thinking about going to the paddock with her but we'll just wait and see now." Corstens expects that whatever happens Origami Miss will be better next year. "She's by Helissio and I think she'll be better when she gets over a bit more ground and when she fully matures." Photos: Fiona Tomlin
