Smart South Australian sprinter Arinos repaid the patience of trainer David Jolly by winning the Service Stream Sprint at Flemington on Oaks Day.
Arinos ($11-$12-$11) blew away Hoystar ($5.00-$7.00-$5.50) by a half length, with another length and three quarters to third placed Dance The Waves ($26-$21). After winning at Flemington in late September, Jolly picked out today's race, opting for it over the Group 1 Salinger Stakes on Derby Day as being more suited to Arinos at this stage of his career. Jolly just kept Arinos ticking over at his Goolwa training base and the lightly raced son of Akhadan duly saluted, running the 1100m in 1:02.81, only 0.61 seconds outside Don't Tell Tom's course record. "This was probably the right race for him", Jolly said. "A sprint handicap not taking on the higher grade as yet." "We did enter him for the Salinger but I didn't think he was quite ready to tackle that grade yet."
"Obviously he's a horse that's still on the minimum so we used that today." With lightweight jockey Craig Williams riding at 53kg, Arinos had a 4kg weight advantage over Hoystar and a massive 6.5kg less than favourite Lucky Secret ($3.60-$5.00F).
"David's been really patient with this horse", Williams said. "Looking at this horse's form, he hasn't been beaten by many." Williams rode Arinos in his September Flemington win and said that the horse derived a lot of benefit from the experience. "Today he had confidence because he'd been down the straight", Williams said. "He's one of those horses that you want to sit really quiet and then stalk, stalk stalk." "When you peel and ask him to go he can really accelerate." "I've got a lot of respect for a horse like Hoystar."
"You can see that's he's come through and we've outgunned him." Owners the Thong Syndicate cheered home Arinos with spirited applause which did not stop until after he had returned to scale. They had plenty to cheer about as their $8,000 purchase collected another $91,500 in prizemoney today, taking his earnings to nearly $200,000 from only 12 starts. "There's been a fair build up to today and they've all been waiting for it", Jolly said. Drawn in barrier 7, Jolly was concerned about which side of the track Arinos should race on.
"Craig was a bit unsure when he went out and he wanted to see what the horse outside him was going to do", Jolly explained. "I was keener for him to come down the inside but in the end we left it up to him."
It was the right choice as the outside division, headed by Lucky Secret, were at a distinct disadvantage.
Apart from canny placement, Jolly thinks the secret to Arinos is keeping him fresh.
"He does race better a bit fresh", he observed. "He enjoys a high speed and certainly in Adelaide we don't get that." "He's a pretty strong horse." "There's not many that can beat him off at the finish especially with the weight advantage." Photos: Quentin Lang
