Smart but inexperienced galloper Caymans produced the second fresh stakeswinner in two races for owner Darley Stud and trainer Peter Snowden at Betfair Park today.
Caymans had won only one of his 5 starts prior to the Guineas but had shown plenty of promise. "You knew it was always there and we were hoping that a big one was just around the corner and it was today", Snowden said. The well named Caymans took out the historic Betfair Sandown Guineas, the first time the race has been sponsored by a wagering firm. He is by Secret Savings from Easy Out, with the Cayman Islands being a well known offshore banking location where ill gotten gains can be squirreled away.
Back a little worse than mid-field on the turn, jockey Kerrin McEvoy brought Caymans ($3.00-$3.50-$3.20) on the scene at the 200m mark and he went right on with the job to win by 1¾ lengths from Marveen ($5.00-$6.00-$5.00) with 2¼ lengths to Lucky Thunder ($3.50-$5.00) which was third throughout. Caymans came into today's race after a chequered run at his last start which saw him take charge of his rider Corey Brown and race erratically before finishing fourth in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes at Flemington on Derby Day. "It was totally out of character what he did at Flemington the other day", said Snowden.
"He was a bit fresh and he raced a bit keen so he locked his jaw as soon as Corey went to ease him." "He was never going to run off, he just raced awkwardly." "Once he straightened up and got back on his right leg he was fine." Before that Caymans encountered a bumping duel on the turn when running third in the Gothic Stakes at Caulfield.
Today, McEvoy again had problems with the wayward Caymans. "All throughout his prep we've seen him do a few things wrong and today he did a few things wrong still", McEvoy said. "When I cracked the whip, he ducked in." "Fortunately there was no one inside me." "Things just haven't gone right for him", said Snowden. "He's always had the ability, we knew that." "It was just a matter of him putting it all together and today he did." "Today he relaxed the whole race." "He looked the winner a long way out, which was good to see."
Caymans will now go for a spell with Group 1 races his target for the Autumn.
"You'd think a race like the Canterbury Guineas or the Rosehill Guineas", was Snowden's response when asked about suitable targets.McEvoy has no doubt that Caymans will be up to the job.
"He's still learning all about it", he said. "He's a big raw horse and got a big frame to build into." "He's picking up really well there but he's got nice ability that's for sure." Photos: Fiona Tomlin
