The locals withstood the interstate invaders and the bookmakers cheered as the outsider Phelan Ready scored a remarkable win in the $2 million Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) at the Gold Coast this afternoon.

Phelan Ready

Prepared by father and son training combination Bruce and Jason McLachlan, Phelan Ready rattled home in the straight to get up and beat the punters elect Paprika by a neck.

Another of the outsiders, the locally prepared Motown Lady, ran a terrific race to wind up in third place, another long neck back.

Phelan Ready was purchased as a yearling by the McLachlan Place Racing Stables for $150,000 from the draft at Kitchwin Hills at last year's Magic Millions Yearling Sale.

The win was the third in the race for McLachlan senior - following wins with St. Jude in 1990 and Our Fiction in 1993.

"I think that was the best win from the whole lot of them," McLachlan said.

"He just got a nice, trouble free run and everything worked out okay."

"Larry (Olsen) said we'd be better off riding him quiet the other day."

What Phelan Ready is achieving now is a bonus according to McLachlan Snr, who feels he will excel as a three-year-old.

"I thought it might have been a bit short for him. Because I've always thought he'd make a lovely Sires' (Produce Stakes) type horse and here he is today winning a Magic Millions."

For Jason McLachlan he was thrilled that the family was able to win Queensland's richest race after three months together in their partnership.

"It was a great win. He's always shown us a ton of potential this horse. He's promised us plenty and finally delivered."

"We told Jason to ride him a bit quiet and use his own discretion. He really found the line - it's just great, so much work has gone into this."

"Full credit to the old man. He never stopped believing in this horse. After the last run we were all a bit disheartened."

McLachlan Jnr said the stable relished the fact that their charge was going into the race without the pressure of being one of the major fancies.

"I said to Dad and the staff during the week that would be going into the race as an underdog. There was no pressure on us and Jason rode his well."

"This is the first year of the partnership with Dad and I and to win this is just an unbelievable feeling."

The win was the biggest for Jason Holder since relocating a number of years ago to Queensland after a successful career in Adelaide.

"I've been here for a while now in Queensland," Holder said. "I've been competitive without breaking any records."

Holder said he was happy with how the youngster was travelling throughout and knew not long after straightening that the favourite Paprika just within reach.

"He travelled really well for me. He really pursued the line really nice."

When told about the locals triumphing in the race for the first time since Regimental Gal - Holder was quick to point out he was still very much a South Australian at heart.

The win was the second by a youngster by More Than Ready in the Classic following an equally as exciting win by his daughter Augusta Proud in last year's race.

Phelan Ready is the first foal from the Group Three Adelaide Guineas winner Nancy Eleanor.

A daughter of Blevic, Nancy Eleanor is a full sister to Still Me (late Bretcarlyle) and half sister to Baughurst.
