Jockey Jason Holder is starting to show signs of improvement but remains in intensive care in an induced coma in Royal Brisbane Hospital following his horrific fall at Eagle Farm.

His manager Tad Pattillo said Holder had opened his eyes a few times in the past 24 hours and scans had been positive.

"We haven't got an update on his condition today but things were looking a bit more positive last night," Pattillo said.

"He's got a fractured skull and fractured cheekbone and a bad cut in his mouth which will need some work.

"It's a bit of a relief. From what the doctors saw from the scans they are pretty pleased with Jason at the moment which is terrific news.

"He's started to open his eyes and he's responded to hand squeezes and the doctors are hoping he might wake up today."

Pattillo said Holder would be sidelined indefinitely.

Holder celebrated his biggest race victory aboard Phelan Ready in last Saturday's Magic Millions Classic at the Gold Coast.

He was knocked unconscious momentarily in Wednesday's fall and was treated on the track for an injury to the back of his head after being thrown heavily to the ground when his mount Oscar The Great fell in the Te Rapa Handicap (1200m).

Holder's head was clipped by Spirito Volante, ridden by Joe Bowditch, as the pair made a run near the 300 metres.

Holder, 32, won five Adelaide jockeys' premiership before he moved to Queensland.
