Boy John confirmed his place as one of the finest sprinters ever to grace Port Lincoln's Ravendale Racecourse when he cruised home in the Port Lincoln Hotel Challenge Heat (1200m) today. In winning his 15th race, Boy John successfully lugged a massive 61 kilos to victory in a performance that thrilled his jubilant connections. The eight-year-old son of Akhadan is trained by his senior part owner Milton Dunn - a former Penong resident and one time outstanding footballer, now living at Port Lincoln. "I wasn't sure he would be able to win today," Dunn said after the race.
"He had such a big weight and the track didn't seem to playing much for leaders today." "But he's a very gutsy horse and he always gives you his all," he added. "He's a pleasure to have in the stable." Milton Dunn's wife, and fellow part owner, Carol was beaming in the winner's stall as she waited for Boy John return to scale. "It's just unbelievable," she said. "I don't know what to say. It's just fantastic." The win in today's $10,000 sprint followed his previous start where he was an equally as impressive two and a half length winner on February 15.
Boy John is one special racehorse. He has raced on 41 occasions - all of them at Port Lincoln - a stone's throw from where he is trained. In all of his 15 wins, Boy John has been ridden by Michael Hoppo. While few other riders have partnered Boy John, Hoppo still has an incredible strike rate on the gelding with the 15 wins coming from 31 runs. Today Boy John was sent out as a $4.60 equal favourite with bookmakers and he cruised home two lengths clear of Better Bond, while Fighting Fury was another three parts of a length back.
