Baughurst continued his outstanding spring with a comprehensive win in today's $125,750 Coongy Cup (2000m) at Caulfield and in doing so made it back to back wins in the feature staying contest. An evergreen eight-year-old by Tayasu Tsuyoshi, Baughurst notched his tenth career win and sent his earnings past $688,000 with his comprehensive length and a quarter success. The win gave connections some compensation for missing a run in the Caulfield Cup. He was made the first emergency for the race and failed to gain a start when no scratchings were received this morning. Prepared by father-son training team Bill and Symon Wilde at Warrnambool, Baughurst has turned into an incredible money spinner for connections who purchased him for just $24,000 at the 2003 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale. "He's a tremendous horse," a beaming Symon Wilde said. "He's given us such a great ride over six or seven years." "He's done a great job. It just makes you wonder what he might have done if he got a run in the Caulfield Cup." At the post Baughurst ($3.50-$4.40-$4 fav) held a length and a quarter margin over the ever consistent Shocking ($4-$4.40) in an all Magic Millions finish. Pacino ($11-$13), second in the race last year, was third this time around, another long neck back. Wilde said the gelding was showing no signs of slowing down and credited his top form over a number of years to the training facilities available to the family at Warrnambool. "I think a lot of it has to do with the beach and the paddock environment at home," Wilde said. "He's got a lot of problems, but he didn't have a saddle on during the week. That's pretty much what we do with him - we race him on a Saturday and then beaches all week." Baughurst is likely to have another run - and at racing's elite level - prior to going for a spell. "I think now we will go to the Mackinnon (Stakes)," Wilde noted. "That's provided he pulls up okay." "If he comes through this, I think he deserves another crack at weight-for-age," he added. Wilde said Baughurst should have at least one more good season of racing prior to any retirement plan. Baughurst, bred by former accomplished trainer Catriona Green, who sadly passed away earlier in the year, is one of three stakes winners produced by the At Talaq mare Mrs. Parnell. Her half sister Nancy Eleanor, a daughter of Blevic, is the dam of the Golden Slipper and Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Phelan Ready. Another half brother, Stillme (late Bretcarlyle) is a multiple stakes winner in Adelaide as well. Picture - Fiona Tomlin
