Handsome Ransom Leaves Great Legacy Behind
Red Ransom died over the weekend possibly from a colic attack or a twisted bowel.

He did have abdominal surgery however the recovery rate would be slender particularly at 22 years of age.

Red Ransom was a good sire on both sides of the Pacific but remained permanently in Australia since last season at Vinery Stud at Scone.

His race record was nothing flash, he did win a Maiden race at Saragtoga in race record time and an Allowance race in Belmont but his stake earnings were a mere $34,400.

It is a bit like a rags to riches story as he has sired winners of $89 million and of his 1,087 runners, 785 were winners and included in that figure were 90 stakes winners.

Here in Australia he got an even number of colts and fillies to win for him although his fillies tended to be more consistent than the colts.

The brilliant Typhoon Tracy has clearly proved that point and to a lesser extent Romneya has as well, as she is a very honest filly.

He is also represented by four sons at stud Charge Forward, Red Dazzler, Domesday and Face Value while recent Group 1 winner All American is maybe a season away from going to stud as well.

Red Ransom is by the English Derby winner Roberto, who also sired the Melbourne Cup winner At Talaq, in his seventh crop to race.

His dam Arabia is by Damascus, a top class racehorse who stood his entire life as a sire at Claiborne Stud.

Red Ransom commenced his first stud season 1991 at a fee of $10,000 and in his final year he was standing at $66,000.
