Tio Rossa has come from last to win the $70,000 Ready Workforce Handicap (1200m) at Moonee Valley today.
A rarely accomplished feat Tio Rossa ($8,$8.50,$7.50) ridden patiently by premier jockey Damien Oliver was able to sit last, off a strong tempo, and pounce late down the outside to score by a short neck over Paganini's Soul ($4.60,$6) with race favourite Broken ($2.40,$3.40) a half neck away third. Cindy Alderson, who trains Tio Rossa with husband Colin highlighted the tenacity shown by her filly in the wi. "We always knew that it would be hard to come from last but she is a tough, honest filly and it was that tenacity at the end which got her across the line today," Alderson said. Only small in stature the race looked ideal for Tio Rossa with just 54kg in a small field. "She was helped by the speed and them taking each other on but the drop in weight was a big factor as she is only a small filly," she added. After a week in the news for all the wrong reasons Oliver was quick to re-affirm why we normally read about him, astutely timing his run after some solid early sectionals. "There was a good speed in the first 3-4 hundred metres which enabled us to have a rest early and still run over them at the end," said Oliver.
"She showed enough in her first prep and the Alderson's should have a lot of fun with her this time of year," he added. A three-year-old filly by Testa Rossa and out of Zabeel mare Tio Belle, Tio Rossa has now won the two times for almost $70,000 in prizemoney. Picture - Greg Irvine & Quentin Lang
