Queensland Breeders Sale Big Early Success
Marking Time, the Markane 2-year-old gelding trained at the Gold Coast by Alan Bailey who followed up a 2.5 lengths win at the Gold Coast on November 21 with a 2.3 lengths victory at Eagle Farm on Saturday November 28, was bred by one of Queensland's most respected racing and breeding leaders, Fred Brown (Brown Place Pty Ltd), and sold for $52,000 at the inaugural Queensland breeders yearling sale, the 2009 QTIS 600 series conducted by Magic Millions at the Gold Coast at the end of March.

He was one of the more expensive yearlings at this sale, one only open to Queensland bred horses and through which the graduates are not only eligible for the rich Magic Millions sale rewards but also those in the boosted Queensland racing incentive scheme.

Marking Time's success continues the spectacular start the QTIS 600 sale has got off to as a source of promising performers at modest prices in the first six weeks of Queensland juvenile racing.

A good advertisement for the advantage of buying Magic Millions yearlings were the horses that filled the trifecta in the $100,000 Magic Millions Plate for juveniles at Toowoomba on the day before Marking Time's Eagle Farm success. All three were in the catalogue for the first QTIS 600 yearling sale.

The race was taken out in a scintillating display by Tough Luck, a Zaha filly bought by her owner Leigh Wanless for only $9,000. Second place went to Tycoon Cat, a Tycoon Ruler gelding passed in at $12,000 and a reserve of $20,000 and third went to Mystic Dragon, a filly in the first crop of the Danehill sire Hidden Dragon who made $28,000.

Both Tough Luck, a winner also at the Sunshine Coast on November 20, and debut runner Tycoon Cat were bred on the Frappell's Clear Mountain Fairview stud at Greenmount near Toowoomba, and Mystic Dragon is another promising galloper produced in the paddocks of the Kruger's Lyndhurst stud at Warwick. Mystic Dragon finished second to Tough Luck at the Sunshine Coast.

Another dashing performer in late November who came out of the QTIS sale was Rocket By, a 6.5 lengths debut winner at Mackay. He is a $20,000 yearling by the Danehill Golden Slipper second Shovhog and like his dam and grandam was bred on Basil Nolan's Raheen stud, Gladfield valley, Warwick.

Also represented in his current crop of 2-year-olds by Adebisi, a winner at Doomben on debut, and Raise Up, a filly who has followed thirds in her first two outings, appearances at the Gold Coast and then Eagle Farm on November 21, with an impressive win at Doomben on December 5, Shovhog is with Stromberg Carlson, a Redoute's Choice sire out of the same dam as Testa Rossa, at Raheen.

Stromberg Carlson's second crop are current 2-year-olds and include the QTIS 600 graduates Whitsunday Express (Raheen, $25,000) and Shezza Riches (Raheen, $9,000). Whitsunday Express has run three times in North Queensland for a second and then two wins, one of them in a $50,000 QTIS feature at Cairns. Second money went to Shezza Riches.

Many of the yearlings in the drafts Raheen are taking to the Magic Millions sale at the Gold Coast in January and the QTIS sale in March are by Shovhog and Stromberg Carlson.

One of the best prospects for Magic Millions and QTIS riches to gallop out of the first QTIS 600 catalogue appears to be Fusette, an impressive winner at Doomben at her only start. Another good winner for the Glenlogan Park located Queensland bred leading Australian sprinter Falvelon, she was sold through the Robyn Wise consignment for $32,000.
