A dream start to a new career was made by the exciting galloper Slither in Singapore on Sunday - the former Victorian galloper impressive at his Kranji debut. Settling a clear last after blowing the start, the Michael Freedman trained four-year-old put on display an exciting turn of foot to quickly gather in his rivals before racing away to an easy victory over 1200m. Conceding his rivals five lengths at the jump, he could not have been more explosive over the final stages - on the line having 1¼ to spare. Freedman was surprised that Slither missed the start - "the whole time he has been here he has not put a foot wrong," he said. "To overcome that and still come out and win - I think that proves he has a future here." Jockey Danny Beasley was all smiles after the win. "Before the race I thought I had six lengths on them," he said - "after missing the start by five and coming outand winning by over a length - well, he hasn't let me down!" Slither was able to win first up despite the 1200m being a little short of his best distance. "His best form back in Melbourne was when he was stepped up in ground," Freedman said - "I thin up to a mile here would be ideal for him." Raced by the Mummify Stable, Slither gave Victorian breeder Julie Nairn reason to cheer. "I was so excited about Slither winning," she enthused, "not just because he is a son of our promising stallion Golden Snake but also because I bred him! Hopefully he will go on to bigger and better things in Singapore." See for yourself just how big Slither's victory was: http://videos.turfclub.com.sg/20091220SR08.wmv Slither, whose dam is a half sister to the dual Listed winner Isolated Duke, had 11 starts in Victoria - recording two wins and six placings. He raced twice at metropolitan level for an encouraging Flemington third and a Caulfield fourth. Slither is by Danzig's four times Gr.1 winning son Golden Snake, a regally bred bay based at Bombora Downs where he stands for the outstanding value fee of $5,500.
A horse well and truly on the up, he has been represented by the ill-fated Gr.1 winner Gilded Venom, the runaway Listed Warrnambool Cup winner Hissing Sid, the local stakes winner Antidotes, the European Group winner Cuba Candy and another potential Singapore based topliner Super Gold - a Gr.3 winner who resumed with an eye-catching fourth over an unsuitable 1000m a couple of weeks ago.
