Canterbury Winner By Current World Sire Giant
Shaketheground, the Joseph Pride winner of race 5 at Canterbury on Thursday of last week, is by Giant's Causeway, a creditable claimant of the title of the world's best sire of this time.

A Coolmore sire who is headquartered at their Ashford stud in Kentucky and who visited their Hunter Valley complex for three years, 2002-04, this son of Storm Cat has followed up being the northern hemisphere's leading sire by stakes winners (22 winners of 30 stakes) and second top by money in 2008 with a clean sweep for 2009.

At December 17 the North American statisticians had Giant's Causeway the leader by runners, a massive 340, stakes winners (21), Group race winners (12 including three at Group 1 level), stakes wins (32) and earnings. The statistics take in his American sired overseas performers as well as those at home.

In the recently released American Blood-Horse Statlion Register for 2010, Giant's Causeway is blurbed as being the leading sire by worldwide earnings with more than $14.3million.

In the last two years, Giant's Causeway's northern hemisphere runners have been headed by eight successful in Group 1 races, including Red Giant (set new world record time of 1:57.16 for 2000m), Heatseeker (new track records 1800m, 2000m) and Carriage Trail (new track record 1800m).

A Group 1 winner and unbeaten at two and a world leading miler at three, the1997 foaled Giant's Causeway kicked off his stud career in Ireland in 2001 and included in his first crop five Group 1 winners headed by Shamardal (World Champion 2YO, European Champion 3YO, winner French Derby, Two Thousand Guineas) and Footstepsinthesand (English Two Thousand Guineas).

Shamardal shuttles to Darley in the Hunter Valley and supplied a dozen winners in his first crop juveniles in 2008-09.

To date he has had four Australian stakes winners, including Faint Perfume, winner in the spring of the Victoria Oaks and Wakeful Stakes and third in the Caulfield Thousand Guineas.

A 5-year-old gelding produced by Titanic Rose, a half-sister by Flying Spur to Group1 winners Titanic Jack and Sober Suit, Canterbury winning Shaketheground is one of 128 winners sired by Giant's Causeway from his three Australian crops. They include ten stakes winners and nine others stakes placed.
