Encosta De Lago Has 32 At Gold Coast Yearling Sale
Two Times Champion Australian sire Encosta de Lago, the source of Saturday's Villiers Stakes winner Palacio de Cristal and of the previous Sunday's Hong Kong International Sprint hero Sacred Kindom, has what appears some of Australia's best racing prospects among the 32 youngsters he has booked into the Magic Millions Gold Coast yearling sale commencing December 6.

Eight are from Danehill mares and other broodmare sires include Mr. Prospector, Flying Spur, Zabeel, Galileo, Marscay, Fusaichi Pegasus, Marscay, Agnes World and Peintre Celebre.

Eleven lots are in the consignment from Coolmore, the home of Encosta de Lago, while other vendors of his yearlings include Palacio de Cristal's breeder Baramul stud, Glastonbury Farm, Strawberry Hill Farm, Widden Stud and Corumbene stud.

Encosta de Lago is one of three sires who have been Australian champion by earnings in the past four completed racing years making big contributions to the Gold Coast catalogue. Also in the Hunter Valley, the others are the Danehill products Redoute's Choice (23 lots) and Flying Spur (33).

Collectively, there are approximately 800 lots got by fifty sires in the Hunter Valley with the other sires making big contributions including More Than Ready (35), General Nediym (30), Fastnet Rock (52), Commands (20), Dehere (23), Exceed and Excel (17), Choisir (16), Hussonet (31), Lonhro (15), Rock of Gibraltar (22), Stratum (45), Starcraft (19), Snitzel (16),Testa Rossa (33), Anabaa (16), Charge Forward (18), Dane Shadow (13), Elusive Quality (16), Magic Albert (19), Mossman (13), Not a Single Doubt (12) and Nadeem (20).

Another interesting sire who has yearlings got from use in the Hunter Valley is the crack Nureyev sprinter Stravinsky (nine lots). Represented by Group 1 winners in both hemispheres, he is a shuttler to the Cambridge stud in New Zealand, but got the 2010 sale yearlings from use at Coolmore in the Hunter Valley after being caught up here in the equine influenza season.

Coolmore (53 lots) is the second biggest consignor behind Gerry Harvey's Baramul stud (87) to the Magic Millions Gold Coast sale. Other Hunter Valley farms with a big percentage of their yearlings available are Amarina Farm (18), Arrowfield (30), Attunga (17), Bellerive (22), Edinglassie (12), Glastonbury (16),Kitchwin Hills (23), Patinack (23), Southern Cross Breeders (30),Turangga (22), Vinery (27), Widden (53), Willow Park (10) and Yarraman Park (33).

In addition to the Hunter Valley contribution, the sale offers buyers the opportunity to bid for the cream of Queensland breeding.

It is a State that goes from strength to strength as a source of top class performers. Headliners in recent years have included General Nediym, Show a Heart, Falvelon, Gold Edition, Burdekin Blues and Black Piranha.

The sale is the main market for the four sires who have runners in the stallion yards at Queensland's leading operation Glenogan Park, namely Show a Heart (30 lots), Falvelon (24), Jet Spur (22) and Bradbury's Luck (19). Jet Spur and Bradbury's Luck are currently two of the three top first season sires in Australia and appear destined for big futures.

The 2010 sale also sees first crop yearlings by Australian Group 1 winner Hotel Grand, the foundation sire at Glenlogan's upmarket neighbour Racetree.

A stud heading to become a big force in breeding and racing, Racetree has a glamour draft including progeny of Hotel Grand, Show a Heart, Canny Lad, Magic Albert and Greenwood Lake, a three-quarter brother to Success Express. Greenwood Lake was one of the two top juveniles of his year in America and has sired winners from American use.

Progeny of their sires Sequalo and Hidden Dragon (a Danehill with first crop 2-year-old winners) are in the contribution from the phenomenal source of winners, Lyndhurst Stud, Warwick; the Nolan's Warwick district located Raheen stud lists progeny of their talented local sires Stromberg Carlson and Shovhog, both of whom have already been represented by juvenile winners in the current racing year; and Robyn Wise, Darling Downs as usual has a quality draft for clients. Other prominent Queensland vendors include Eureka, Wattle Brae, Darlington, Furlong, Highgrove, Oakwood, Oaklands and Royston studs.

Besides the Queensland and Hunter Valley vendors, there are consignments from other major vendors in NSW and from Victoria.

Overall it appears the strongest line up ever listed for the Gold Coast, a market whose graduates have included 67 who have earned a million dollars-plus.

The first five sessions of the 2010 sale are on Wednesday,Thursday, Friday, Saturday (evening) and Sunday January 6,7, 8,9 and 10 and the final day's session is on Thursday January 14. The latter sale is followed by a mixed catalogue the next day.

The Saturday evening session is preceded during the day by one of the world's most unique race days at the neighbouring Gold Coast racecourse.

Only graduates of Magic Millions yearling sales are eligible to contest the ten races, none of which carries less than $100,000, including the $2million Magic Millions 2YO Classic and the $1million Magic Millions 3YO Trophy.
