How To Use This Service - Race Form Explanation (Page Heading)
  • RANDWICK - the name of the track where the meeting is to be run.
  • 07/07/97 - the date the meeting is to be held.
  • 1 - the race number on the day.
  • 12.30 - the time (in local time) that the race is due to be run.
  • Test Race - the race name, often featuring the sponsor of the race.
  • 1200m - the distance of the race in metres.
  • Open - the class of the race. In this case Open means open to all ages and classes, but there are numerous classifications. Stakes races (Group 1, 2 & 3 and Listed) are the highest class, going down to country maiden as the lowest.
  • $1,000 - the prizemoney for the race (including the value of any trophies). Generally, the higher the prizemoney, the better the class of horse which will be racing. Note that this is the prizemoney advertised by the race club. There are often other prizes on offer, such as breeder's bonuses, which are only available to certain horses in the race.
  • Apprentices Cannot Claim - in most races, apprentice jockeys can claim up to 3kgs to reduce the weight their mount is carrying. The reason for this is to compensate for an apprentice's lesser experience. Some races however, do not allow the claim to be taken, with the effect that an apprentice may be at a disadvantage compared to a more experienced jockey.
  • Age/Sex Restrictions - many races are restricted to horses of a certain age and/or sex. Generally a horse is at an advantage if competing against its own age and sex.
  • Weight For Age - this is the highest class of race, where a horse is allotted weight according to its age and sex, rather than its previous performances. Normally races are programmed with a minimum weight, with the better performed horses getting more weight. Many races also have a set weight for all horses, or one weight for colts and another for fillies.
How To Use This Service - Race Form Explanation (Field)
  • No - the saddlecloth number for this horse. This is also the TAB number for the horse.
  • Form - the last 4 starts in summary form. Each number represents the finishing position. A '0' means 10th or worse. An 'X' means a spell of longer than 45 days. An 'F' means that the horse fell during the race. An 'L' means the horse lost its rider. 'D' means disqualified.
  • Horse Name - the name of the horse. Every horse which races in Australia must have a different name from any other horse racing. Sometimes a horse is imported to Australia from another country, in which case it has a suffix after its name indicating the country it came from.
  • Barrier - each horse starts from a separate barrier, the number of which is decided by lot. Generally the wider the barrier, the less advantageous, as the horse drawn wide has to cover extra ground. An understanding of each track and the barrier position for each race distance is important though, as a wide barrier can be an advantage if there is a long run to the first turn, or if the horse dislikes racing inside other horses.
  • Jockey - the jockey who will ride the horse. Sometimes the jockey has to be changed because of illness or injury.
  • Weight - the allotted weight for this horse in this race. If the horse is being ridden by an apprentice jockey and claims are allowed, the horse may carry a lower weight. Note that jockey's claims are progressively reduced as they ride more winners, until they 'outride their claim'. Note also that while a horse cannot carry less than its allotted weight (except for apprentices claims), some jockeys may have to ride overweight due to their inability to 'make the weight'.
  • API - Average Prizemoney Index - this is a rough measure of the class of the horse. It is calculated by dividing the total prizemoney earned by the horse, by the number of starts it has had, muliplied by 1000. The higher the API, generally the better the class of horse. Even though the horse may not be winning, it can still pick up substantial prizemoney by running a place in a major race.
  • Win % - the number of races the horse has won, divided by the races it has competed in.
  • Place % - the number of races the horse has run first, second or third divided by the races it has competed in.
  • Stakes - the total stake money won by the horse in all of its starts. Note that this includes breeder bonuses, so it may not equate to the advertised prizemoney of all the races the horse has won prizemoney in.
How To Use This Service - Race Form Explanation (Detailed Form)
  • When you click on any horse's name in the race form page, you will jump to the detailed 5 start form for that horse. Form for all other horses for the same race is also available ie once into the form section, you can scroll or jump up and down the form to examine all the horses in the race. The detailed form may also be printed out.
  • Note that under each horse's form is a 'navigation bar' designed to make jumping around within the form guide easier. The 'Top' link will take you to the top of the form page (very handy if you are positioned at horse number 16 and you want to check out horse number 2). The '1' link will take you directly to horse number 1 (the only one in this case).
  • Age - the horse's age in years. Note that all horses become 1 year older on August 1st, regardless of their actual birth date. Young horses therefore often have a maturity advantage over their peers if they are born in August or September.
  • Colour - bl is black, br is brown, b is bay, ch is chestnut, gr is grey, rn is roan.
  • Sex - h is horse (male 4 years and older), g is gelding, c is colt, f is filly, m is mare (female 4 years and older).
  • Trainer - The horse's trainer and training location.
  • Owner - the owner(s) of the horse. Frequently horses are raced in joint ownership by several people. The rules of racing also allow for horses to be raced by syndicates, which may number tens or even hundreds of owners.
  • Breeding - the sire and dam of the horse are shown, together with country suffix if they were imported to Australia, or the horse was conceived outside Australia.
  • Colours - the racing colours to be worn by the jockey in the race.
  • 28:14-7-1 - in order, the number of races the horse has competed in, firsts, seconds and thirds.
  • Wins - the various distances the horse has won at and the number of wins at each distance.
  • This Distance - the performance of the horse at this distance. In order, the number of races contested, wins, seconds, thirds.
  • This Track - the performance of the horse at this track.
  • Fast - the performances of this horse on a fast track (anywhere). A fast track is one which is very dry and hard. Horses will generally run their fastest times on a fast track.
  • Good - the performances of the horse on a good track. A good track is one where there is some 'give' in the ground. Times are generally slower than the fast track.
  • Dead - performances on a track which is a bit rain affected.
  • Slow - performances on tracks which are quite rain affected.
  • Heavy - performances on tracks which are noticeably rain affected ie muddy. Times are slowest on this type of track and many horses which are adept on good and fast going cannot handle the going at all.
  • First Up - performances first up after a spell. Some horses take a few starts to strike form after a break. Some either run well 'fresh' or they are trained to win first up. Note that a horse with good first up form which has had a change of stable, may not do so in the future, because of different training practices.
  • Spell - when the horse has had a break from racing of more than 45 days. Note that while it may not have been racing, most horses would have been doing trackwork for 2-3 months before resuming from a spell.
  • 2-10 - is the finishing position and the number of runners in this race. A '0' means 10th or worse. An 'F' means that the horse fell during the race. An 'L' means the horse lost its rider. 'D' means disqualified. A + sign shows that the horse won the race. An * means that the horse was mentioned in the steward's report for the race.
  • 1.3L - is the distance that the horse was from the winner in this race. If the horse won, it is the winning margin.
  • R'wick - is the abbreviated track name where this race was run.
  • 12Ap97 - the date of the race
  • 2000m - the distance of the race
  • Qu. Eliz. Stks - the name of the race
  • G1 - the class of the race. In this case, Group 1 which is the highest class. Stakes races (Group 1, 2 & 3 and Listed) are the highest class, going down to country maiden as the lowest.
  • (5) - the race number on the day ie race 5
  • $302500 - the total prizemoney on offer in the race
  • ($54,000) - if present, the prizemoney won by the horse in that race
  • Track Condition - the track condition when the race was run
  • R.S. Dye - the jockey who rode the horse in the race
  • 3 - the barrier position which the horse started from in the race
  • Cd 57.0 - the actual weight carried in the race, allowing for apprentice claims and overweights
  • (WFA) - the minimum weight condition for the race, or alternatively the weight scale used.
  • 2.01.22 - the time for the entire race
  • (36.59) - if present, the sectional time for the last part of the race. Many non-metropolitan tracks do not have the ability to record these times. Normally this is the time for the last 600m.
  • 11/8F - the starting price with bookmakers during betting on the race. The 'F' means that the horse started favourite ie the most fancied horse with the lowest odds.
  • S 3 - the horse's position on settling after the start
